What the Social Security Number SSN Means

The nine-digit Social Security number is divided into three parts:

• The first three digits are the area number. If the Social Security number was assigned before 1972 when Social Security cards were issued by local offices, the area number reflects the State that issued the number. If the number was assigned in 1972 or later when the Social Security Administration began issuing Social Security cards centrally, the area number represents the State as determined by the ZIP code in the mailing address on the application for the number. 000 is never assigned

• The middle two digits are the group number. They have no special significance. 000 is never assigned

• The last four digits are serial numbers. They represent a straight numerical sequence of digits from 0001-9999 within the group. Social security numbers SSN are assigned in incrementing order. 0000 is never assigned

If the death record is not found, some reasons may be due to:

• Death not reported to the Social Security Administration (SSA).

• Death occurred prior to 1962

• Person did not participate in the Social Security program.

• Recent death not reported
